Janosik is a Slavic folk legend that is based on true events, which plays in the polish and Slovak Tatra mountains, where a young man is seeking justice for the people of Podhale that suffer under the reign of their lords. To get his justice the young man desires to join a group of robbers, that steal from the lords and give to the poor, suffering people of Podhale.
But in order to join, the robbers make him pass some tests, that were only feasible, because the boy got some help from magical beings that he met on his journey.
It is a story about revenge, justice and betrayal with insights into the polish culture and it shows the type of dark, dramatic, non-happy-ending story that polish folklore is full of.
Idea
The idea behind the book was it to bring readers in contact with polish folklore and culture through a free-spririted layout that encapsulates the essence of the rebellious protagonist, combined with illustrations, which leave room for imagination.
Illustrations
The illustrations were done analog with ink on paper, to convey the crafty „hands-on“ character of the local people of the region, where this story plays in. I chose to illustrate mostly scenery and story elements, instead of people and interactions, to leave room for the readers imagination.
